Denis Bouriakov has recently been appointed principal flutist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Born in 1981 in Crimea (now Ukraine), in 1991 he was admitted to the Moscow Central Special Music School, where he studied with Y. N. Dolzhikov. With the support of the “New Names” International Charity Foundation and the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation, he played as a soloist in concert tours to more than twenty countries. He went on to study with William Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating in 2004. He received the DipRAM diploma for an outstanding final recital, the Principal’s Award, and the Fellowship Award for the 2004-2005 academic year. In 2006, he was named an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. During his time in London, he freelanced as principal flute with the Philharmonia of London, Leeds Opera North, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and the Russian Orchestra of London.
Denis Bouriakov has won prizes at some of the leading international competitions: first prize at the Concertino Praga (Czech Republic, 1998), PanEuropean Competition in Thessaloniki, Greece (2007), and Barnett Foundation, Chicago (2007); second prize at the Jean-Pierre Rampal competition (2005), and others at the Munich ARD, Kobe, Carl Nielsen, Leonardo de Lorenzo, Aurele Nicolet, and Maxence Larrieu competitions.
Just a year after graduating from the Royal Academy, Bouriakov became principal flute with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland, where he also taught at the Tampere Conservatory of Music for three years. In 2008 he was appointed principal flute of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. For the past few years, he has been William Bennett’s teaching assistant at his International Summer Schools in Farnham (UK) and Chicago. They have also recorded J.S. Bach Double Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra for the BEEP label and performed joint concerts in Japan. His first solo CD, which includes the premiere recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto on flute, was released in 2009.
Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2004 as second flutist and was appointed principal flutist this summer. Born in Neskaupstadur, Iceland, in 1975, he began studying the flute with Bernhard Wilkinson at age eight. After graduating in 1995 from the Reykjavik Conservatory, having won numerous prizes, he entered the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he earned a master of music with Peter Lloyd. His teachers have also included William Bennett, Trevor Wye, and Wissam Boustany. In 2001 he won the Young Musician Award from the Icelandic arts committee ÝMIR and premiered a concerto by Paul Pampichler, written for him for that occasion, with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Höskuldsson’s solo career has taken him to such venues as the Purcell Room in London and Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, CAMI Hall, Merkin Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and BargeMusic in New York. His festival engagements have included the Guiting and Aldeburgh festivals and the Shaw Library Concert Series in London, the Academy of Music Festival in New Jersey, the Chamber Music Conference in Bennington, Vermont, the One World Symphony Chamber Music Series, and the Summit Music Festival. He also gives master classes at the Manhattan School of Music.
In addition to his current orchestral position Mr. Höskuldsson has played principal flute with the Westchester Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet Orchestras. He has recorded for the Naxos and Castle labels.
