NYFC president 1983-1986
John Solum made his debut as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and has since performed as soloist and chamber music player in 37 countries. He has made recordings of more than 90 works on both modern and historic flutes on many European and American labels. He has appeared in solo and chamber music concerts at such festivals as Edinburgh, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Prague Spring, Helsinki, Dubrovnik, Lucerne, Montreux, Haslemere, Flanders, Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Cervantes Festival in Mexico, Caramoor, Oregon Bach, Vermont Mozart, Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center, Aston Magna, and the Connecticut Early Music Festival, of which he was co-founder and artistic director for 17 years. His many recital appearances include the Library of Congress in Washington, the Frick Collection in New York, and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. A student of William Kincaid, Solum organized the commission to Aaron Copland to write his Duo in memory of Kincaid. He is the author of The Early Flute and edited The NFA 20th-Anniversary Anthology of American Flute Music.
