NYFC president 1944-1947
Milton Wittgenstein (1894-1963) began his career in the silk business but after the Depression followed other members of the family into music. He was the son of Hugo Wittgenstein, first flutist of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic (1878- 1887) and nephew of Oscar Wittgenstein, first flutist of Cappa's band; Oscar's son Victor was a prominent pianist in New York. Milton Wittgenstein played often on radio in the 1940s and 50s. He had a woodwind quintet and a regular group, the Oxford Ensemble, which recorded for Musicraft and Decca. He also gave frequent recitals in the New York area.
