With guest artist Karl-Heinz Schütz
Karl-Heinz Schütz is principal solo flute with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and also plays solo flute at the Vienna Philharmonic. From 2005 to 2011 he held this position at the Vienna Symphony. He is a professor of flute at the Vienna Conservatory (Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien).
Born in Innsbruck and raised in Landeck/Tirol, he received his musical education in Austria, Switzerland, and France. He is graduate of the Vorarlberg State Conservatory in Austria (where he was a student of Eva Amsler) and of the Lyon CNSM (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique) in France (where he was a student of Philippe Bernold). Additional private studies with Aurèle Nicolet in Switzerland were also influential.
He won first prize in the Carl Nielsen International Flute competition in 1998 and the Krakov International Flute competition in 1999. Prior to joining the Vienna Symphony, he spent four years as principal solo flute in the Stuttgart Philharmonic while concurrently teaching at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory.
He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America in repertoire ranging from the baroque to the avant-garde. As a soloist he has played the important flute concertos with orchestras such as Wiener Symphoniker, Wiener Concertverein, Classical Players Vienna, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona, Odense Symphony, Camerata XXI Tarragona, Concertino Wien, Capella Cracoviensis, and others, and has had the opportunity to make music with conductors such as Georges Pretre, Pierre Boulez, Ivan Fischer, Lorin Maazel, Kent Nagano, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Yakov Kreizberg, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos, Yuri Simeonov, Vladimir Fedosejev, Fabio Luisi, Franz Welser-Möst and Wolfgang Sawallisch. He is regularly invited to teach masterclasses at throughout the world and is a member of the Dorian Consort and the Doremis Ensemble Wien.
He recorded on many labels and his flute CDs include performances of music by Debussy and Boulez, the W.F. Bach flute duets, J.S. Bach's Fourth Brandenburg Concerto, and Taffanel's opera fantasies. For more information, visit karlheinzschuetz.com.
