LECTURE RECITALS

The Joy of the Masterpiece: Allison Kiger and Christopher Johnson will provide insight into the Walter Piston Sonata. Written in the late 1920s, its rich atonality and meticulous craftsmanship capture the American moment in the "Age of Anxiety," with poignant themes that still resonate today.

The Joy of Puerto Rican Music: Darwin Cosme Sanchez will give a lecture-recital featuring the music of Puerto Rican composers Alberto Rodriguez Ortiz, Awilda Villarini, and Jack Delano, who are underrepresented in traditional recital programs, demonstrating the influence Western European music has had on their work.

The Joy of the Underworld: Tessa Brinckman and Lisa Cella present three works (by Linda Dusman, Aida Shirazi, and Dominik Karski) for alto and bass flutes that push the boundaries both technically and sonically, examining how extended techniques are a beautiful means to an expressive end.

MASTERCLASS

The Joy of Teaching: Guest artist Marco Granados shares his ideas about playing with a steady flow of air, to enable the player to produce a beautiful, warm sound and play with unrestricted technique applicable to all styles and genres. The student participants are
Emily DeNucci (Zyman's Sonata No.1), Rebecca Sayles (Antonio Lauro’s Venezuelan Waltz, transcribed for solo flute by Marco Granados), and Gabriel Enrique Rosado-Bauzá (Omar Acosta's Solo de Pajarillo).

CONCERTS

The Joy of Movement: Zara Lawler brings her unique brand of artistry, which integrates dance and theater, to her performance for the flute fair.

New York Artists Concert: Robert Dick, Stephanie Jutt, Lish Lindsey, and Jessica Aura Taskov perform a concert of works by Robert Dick, Gary Schocker, Kristen Stoner, and Angel LaSala.

The Joy of the Electric Flute: David Wechsler will perform Thea Musgrave's Narcissus for solo flute and digital delay, as well as his own Eight Moods for Solo Electronically Altered Flutes, and some electronic flute improvisations with percussion.

The Joy of Fusion: Carla Campopiano, flute; Gustavo Cortiñas, percussion; and Horacio Martinez, vocals and guitar; in a collaboration that fuses native Argentine and South American music with new energy, carrying the tango traditions through jazz and improvisation in original compositions and arrangements.

The Joy of Performing: A gala concert featuring guest artist Marco Granados, a flutist equally comfortable performing music of many different traditions, including music of his native Venezuela.

WARMUPS AND  WORKSHOPS

The Joy of Flow: Start the day with a warmup session led by Marco Granados and learn about his flow-based technique, regarding the use of air in flute playing.

The Joy of Maintenance: Anne Pollack, of Your Flute Works, shares tips and techniques of basic flute repair. Learn how to make quick minor adjustments and how to recognize when a professional is needed to handle more serious repair issues.

The Joy of Fula: Fula flutist Sylvain Leroux will conduct a workshop in applying elements of the language and techniques of the Fula flute, a traditional West African wooden flute, to the modern concert flute.

The Joy of Baroque Improvisation: Laura Thompson explores the world of improvisation using Joachim Quantz's On Playing the Flute, presenting a practical workshop designed to spark creativity and self-expression.

FLUTE CHOIR

The Joy of Ensemble Playing: Jayn Rosenfeld leads a flute choir reading session. Bring your C flute, piccolo, alto, or bass flute to read through fun repertoire and enjoy making music with others.
