British-born Ian Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the flute world.  His compositions have been performed across five continents on stages ranging from London’s South Bank to the Glastonbury Rock Festival and have been featured in four consecutive four BBC Young Musician Woodwind finals*.  These published works are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today and are being embraced by internationally acclaimed performers, teachers, colleges, and students alike.

Featured as a guest soloist at major conventions in Italy, Brazil, Slovenia, Hungary, and the Netherlands, Ian Clarke has also soloed numerous times for the British Flute Society and the National Flute Association (NFA). He has performed in Iceland, Canada, and France and regularly tours the United States.  In 2012 Mr. Clarke performed as one the headline artists in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas for the NFA. Within, his acclaimed CD, is one of the flute world’s bestsellers.

Ian Clarke has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music and Trinity College of Music.  He has worked with Flutewise over many years and has been their artist of the year.  He has performed in genres ranging from classical opera to a guest appearance with Ian Anderson and the rock group Jethro Tull. Over the years Ian Clarke has been invited as a guest artist to many of the top flute courses. Along with Clare Southworth, he led the Woldingham International Summer School for many years. In 2013 he again taught and performed at the Scottish Summer School.  He is regularly invited to lead numerous flute events working with all ages and stages around the country and abroad.

Mr. Clarke studied part-time with Simon Hunt, Averil Williams, and Kate Lukas of the Guildhall School of Music, London. He concurrently studied mathematics at Imperial College, London, graduating with honors. He is professor of flute at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He works extensively with musician/composer Simon Painter writing, producing and performing music for film and  television under the name of Diva Music.

In the workshop, Ian Clarke demonstrated a number of extended techniques that he taught to the assembled participants. Hear the group integrate the techniques with some simple melodies and rhythms to create a spontaneous musical composition. In the concert that followed, with pianist Dianne Frazer, he performed seven of his flute compositions and Taffanel's Fantaisie sur Der Freischutz. Hear a segment of the concert
