The 2014 New York Flute Fair featured the flutists of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Stefán Höskuldsson,  Denis Bouriakov,  and Stephanie Mortimore, and Maron Khoury.  This year's Fair had a full schedule, listed in the program, of performances, workshops, exhibits, and, of course, NYFC's annual Competition. VIEW Michael Parlloff's 2014 video: Part 1 touches on the flutists' geographically diverse backgrounds, early training, practice habits, and persistence in the face of discouragement. Part 2 provides some "shop talk" about the special challenges and rewards of being a flutist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

MEET MECH MOUTH, the mechanical student flutist. Physicist Katherine Saenger will introduce MechMouth, an artificial blower system for studying flute tone production. PRINCIPLES OF EXERCISE FOR FLUTISTS: Physical therapist Ellen Shapiro will explain muscle basics: how the muscles used by flutists really work, strength vs. endurance, how to do active warmups, appropriate length of practice time (with rest periods), and how to cool down.

YOGA FOR FLUTISTS: Nicole Newman will examine the three places of attention in the asana (posture) practice: the shape of the posture, the breathing system and the gazing point. She will also teach techniques for optimal weight distribution to avoid placing undue stress on sensitive joints.

KUHLAU MEET AND GREET: Bring your flutes and meet new chamber music partners for an informal get-together organized by Malcolm Spector. Read duets and trios by the composer nicknamed “the Beethoven of the flute” during his lifetime. Music will be supplied, but feel free to bring music you would like to read.

NOW WE CAN SING: An Immigrant’s Tale in Flute, Song and Story. Learn the little known tale of the Judische Kulturbund in this moving and uplifting musical event chronicling the struggle of Jewish musicians in 1930s Germany. With flutist Barbara Siesel and singer/songwriter/storyteller Keith Torgan.

Zara Lawler presents The Sustainable Studio, building and maintaining a flute studio as a business and a creative endeavor. Nicole Camacho talks about utilizing social media and how to create and fund musical projects.

GALA CONCERT: The Flutists of the Metropolitan Opera, Denis Bouriakov, Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, Maron Anis Khoury, and Stephanie Mortimore perform a program of virtuoso works by Barrère, Bach, Taffanel, Ichiyanagi, Liebermann, Felsenfeld, Paganini, and Tchaikovsky.
