Young Musicians Contest 2016

The 2016 Young Musicians Contest was held on Sunday, March 13. We congratulate the winners and thank coordinator Yeami Kim and judges Sanae Nakayama, Koaki Shinkai, and Mary-Ann Tu (ages 8 and under, 9-11) and Suzanne Gilchrest, Katherine Fink, and Karla Moe (ages 12-14, 15-18). The winners performed at a Flute Fair concert on April 3.

Age 8 and Under: Ella Cohen

Ella Liu Cohen is a third grade student at P.S. 859 Special Music School in New York City.  Under a unique public/private collaboration that combines music training within a full academic program, she has studied flute for over three and a half years as a student of Valerie Holmes.  Besides flute, she loves drawing, eating dumplings, and playing outdoors with her two brothers and baby sister.
 


 


Ages 9-11: Sadie Goodman and Kay Considine

Sadie Goodman is one of the youngest members performing with the Norwalk Youth Symphony Concert Orchestra.  She recently performed as first chair flute with the WCSMA Elementary All-County Band in Westchester, New York. Last summer, she participated in the Boxwood Festival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, attending workshops and performing in concerts playing flute and recorder.  Sadie studies with  Adrianne Greenbaum (Professor of Music, Mt. Holyoke College) in Fairfield, CT.  She attends the 6th grade at John Jay Middle School in Lewisboro, NY and is an avid bike rider and swimmer.

 

 

 

Kay Considine is a fourth grader at J. Spencer Smith School in Tenafly, NJ.  She has been studying flute for over four years with Ms. Noelle Perrin.  She plays flute in the school band as well as in the Tenafly Elementary Symphony.  Aside from flute, Kay enjoys playing tennis and with her friends and dog Georgie.


 

 

 


Ages 12-14: Nadira Novruzov

Nadira Novruzov is in the 8th grade at the Special Music School in Manhattan, a public school for musically gifted children and has been studying flute since kindergarten. She is currently studying with Bart Feller. This marks her fourth time winning the New York Flute Club’s annual Young Musician’s Contest. In May of 2012, Nadira was the only flutist selected to participate in the Suzuki Association of Americas' 40th anniversary showcase 'Kaleidoscope' concert at the Minneapolis Orchestra Hall. In the fall of 2012 Nadira played at the winner's recital for the Alexander and Buono Competition at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and again, the following year, in a winning duet for the Rondo Young Artist Festival. In December of 2013 Nadira had a rare opportunity to play first flute alongside the legendary Sir James Galway at the Merkin Concert Hall for a public demonstration of his website firstflute.com.


 


Age 15-18: Jonah Murphy

Jonah Murphy attends Mannes Preparatory Division, Honors Program, and is a winner of the Mannes Prep Concerto Competition (2013). Last summer, Jonah performed at the National Flute Association’s annual convention (Washington, DC) in its High School Masterclass. He also has won the New York Flute Club Young Musicians Competition, ages 12-14 (2014), as well as the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award (2014). Jonah is in the flute section of the New York Youth Symphony, principal flute in Mannes Prep’s Philharmonic Orchestra, co-principal flute in InterSchoolOrchestras of New York Symphony, and a member of the alt-classical teen ensemble Face the Music; he was also a member of the Honor Orchestra of America 2014 (Indianapolis). Other honors include 2014 and 2015 grants from the Alex AssoianMusic Project, and an Honorable Mention from the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition 2013. Jonah has attended Orford International Music Academy in summers 2014 and 2015 to attend its flute masterclass taught by Robert Langevin. His primary flute teachers are Laura Gilbert and Frances Brodeur.
